Neighborhood Health Centers: The Key to a Healthy Community

neighborhood health centers

Since the 1960s, neighborhood health centers have been building healthy communities right in your backyard and throughout America. Harmony Healthcare Long Island and more than 1,400 other community health centers across the country provide increased access to affordable quality health services for adults and children from all walks of life.

Helping Americans Lead Healthy Lives Since 1965

Community health centers are nonprofit organizations that meet the primary and preventive health care needs of individuals and families from low-income areas with limited access to those types of services.

The health centers located in your community are open to everyone, regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay. The health care services they provide are customized to meet the cultural and linguistic needs of members of the community.

Since neighborhood health centers were first introduced in the 1960s, they have grown from small storefront clinics to networks of medical centers with multiple locations throughout the community.

Why Health Centers are Essential to the Community

For more than 50 years, neighborhood health centers have been the cornerstone of local communities across the country. They have (and continue to) strengthen the community by providing quality, affordable care to all.

3 Key Contributions to the Community

  • Improved access to a wide range of health care services, including family medicine, pediatric care, specialty services, and dental services, for all members of the community
  • Provide cost-effective health care options that reduce costly emergency room visits and lengthy hospital stays
  • Offer additional care services, including transportation, translation, case management and patient care coordination

Every August, this week aims to raise public awareness about the mission and accomplishment of these medical facilities that meet the needs of vulnerable children, adults and seniors.

For 2021, the theme is “The Chemistry for Strong Communities.” Throughout the week, each day is dedicated to a particular area of focus.
