June is National Men’s Health Awareness Month, and there is no better time to consider making minor changes to improve one’s overall well-being. Men tend to be less inclined to visit the doctor’s office for basic screenings and checkups.

While these visits may seem unnecessary, they are key in the early detection of diseases for fast treatment and prognosis. Consider taking the necessary steps to ensure a positive health outcome for the peace of mind of yourself and your loved ones.

What is Men’s Health Awareness Month?

Every June, Since 1992, Men’s Health Network began to promote the importance for men of all ages to take control of their health and wellness.

The Importance of Annual Exams

Annual visits to the doctor’s office (regardless of whether you are feeling ill or not) can be lifesaving. These check-ups usually involve preventative screenings and tests that can catch harmful diseases or other health problems before they become too advanced. These early diagnostics allow physicians to treat health concerns in a prompt manner to avoid further damage to your overall well-being.

Men’s health awareness varies depending on age. It is recommended that men older than 50 should have at least one physical exam per year, and men younger than 50 should visit their doctor at least every three to five years.

What to Expect at the Doctor’s Office

You should be ready to report on the medical history of yourself and your family members as there are hereditary illnesses that can be passed on generation after generation. You will be screened for those particular illnesses first before moving on to other essential tests.

Your physician will likely take screenings of your blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, and lungs before proceeding to more specific exams.

What Are the Most Common Tests and Screenings?

Aside from regular physical exams, other tests and screenings that you can expect (depending on your age and medical history) include:

Cholesterol

Screens for plaque buildup in your arteries that may put you at risk for heart disease.

Diabetes

Tests your blood sugar levels to determine your risk for diabetes, or to determine a diagnosis

Colon Cancer

Used to determine your risk of colon cancer and is recommended for men between the ages of 45 to 75 years old.

Prostate Cancer

Used to determine your risk of prostate cancer and is recommended for men over 45 years old.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

This test is recommended if you have a history of tobacco use and are over 55 years old. It is used to determine if your aorta (the main artery that supplies blood to your lower body) has been compromised.
