Not Feeling Well at Work? 5 Tips to Reduce Workplace Stress

The workplace can be a constant source of stress, from deadlines to job security. Recent numbers show that 63% of U.S. workers report they’re ready to quit their job to avoid or reduce workplace stress. Employees have far less tolerance for things like poor working conditions, mismanagement, or toxic co-workers, especially after working from home where those things weren’t present.

Your Physical and Mental Health Are a Priority

Exposure to stress for long periods is detrimental to your health. Physically, it can cause headaches, digestive issues, high blood pressure, stroke, or a heart attack. Mentally, stress can cause feelings of depression or anxiety which can take a toll on your personal life. While offices are taking notice and doing their part to address the culture of the workplace environment, there are things that you can do to help reduce workplace stress.

1.     Work on Better Communication

If something is causing stress and affecting your work throughout the day, you must address it with your supervisor or manager. You can’t sit throughout the day feeling anxious about an ongoing issue. It will cause undue stress and anxiety, affecting your work and personal life. Instead, encourage open communication and make sure your concerns are heard.

2.     Improve Your Time Management Skills

Rushing to work daily or constantly feeling overwhelmed or behind with workflow can trigger anxiety or panic attacks. Instead, work on organizing your time better. For example, adjust your morning routine so you can leave earlier and have a much less stressful commute. Additionally, when it comes to managing your workload, reassess your process, figure out what you need to prioritize, and put together a weekly strategy to accomplish it at a realistic pace.

3.     Take a Healthy Approach

The better you feel, the better you’re equipped to handle the day’s stressors. So, focus on self-care during your workday and when you’re at home. Pack yourself healthy lunch options, drink water throughout the day, sit outside, or take a walk during your lunch break and consider listening to calming music while you work.

4.     Ask for Flexible Hours

Flex hours can help reduce workplace stress by helping you create a better work/life balance. Not only can it give you peace of mind knowing that you will be able to accomplish or tend to certain things, but it will also give you something to look forward to. The anticipation of a fun event can be a powerful feeling and help to distract or lessen some of your challenging moments at work.

5.     Avoid Customer Conflicts

Conflict with a co-worker or client can sometimes test your patience and cause frustration and anxiety. Remaining professional in a moment like this is one thing, yet you must also stay calm and control your heart rate and blood pressure. Take some deep long breaths, try to change the temperature of the conversation, and remind yourself that whatever the issue may be is not worth affecting your health.
