Harmony Healthcare at Hempstead, located at 619 Fulton Avenue, Hempstead, NY 11550, has been led by Dr. Gina Reinoso since 2019. She is a dedicated Medical Champion, recognized for her commitment to literacy and early relational health.

In 2024, Reach Out and Read of Greater New York welcomed four new Harmony HealthCare LI practices under the leadership of Dr. Suanne Kowal-Connelly. Dr. Kowal-Connelly has gone above and beyond to strengthen this program by fundraising for beautifully designed waiting room areas that now feature child-friendly reading corners and books for families to enjoy while waiting for their medical appointments.

Dr. Kowal-Connelly has ensured that ROR GNY books are easily accessible near examination rooms, and labeled for quick selection by medical providers. All providers at these sites have completed ROR core training and successfully integrated book tracking into their EMR system. She meets regularly with staff to monitor program fidelity and gather feedback from both medical providers and families. Additionally, these sites are connected with programs like “Help Me Grow” LI, further strengthening early childhood support and developmental resources.

A Beautiful Moment from the Clinic

During a well-child visit, a 2-year-old arrived with their mother and older sibling (about 3 years old). The child was crying and anxious, but something changed as Dr. Kowal-Connelly knelt to their level and introduced a flip-flap book in Spanish. As she said “Hola” and “Adiós,” repeating “Hola” and “Adiós” multiple times, the child gradually repeated the word, bringing joy to both the mother and sibling. The room filled with laughter as they watched the child light up and engage with the book.

Dr. Kowal-Connelly praised the parent for encouraging reading routines at home, reinforcing the importance of early relational health and bonding through shared activities like reading, dancing, and playing together.
