National Recovery Month: A Strong, Proud Community Emerges
Once clouded by shame and stigma, the recovery movement has made great strides towards widespread acceptance. Now in its 32nd year, September’s National Recovery Month celebrates all those who are on the journey of recovery and everyone who has been there for them along the way.
Why We Recognize National Recovery Month
Substance abuse and addiction have been on the rise across America and in our communities.
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, nearly 20 million American adults (ages 12 and older) dealt with a substance use disorder in 2017.
Many of us now know at least one person who is (or has) faced problems with substance abuse or addiction. Whether these issues have directly touched your life or not, National Recovery Month provides an opportunity to reflect on how substance use disorders are impacting not only individual lives but your community as a whole.
Recovery is for Every Person, Family and Community
This year’s theme, “Recovery is for Everyone: Every Person, Every Family, Every Community,” serves as a reminder to anyone on their journey to recovery that they are never alone.
National Recovery Month is a federally recognized national observance, which is held every September. It aims to promote and support:
- New evidence-based treatment and recovery practices
- The emergence of a strong, proud recovery community
- The dedication of service providers and community members who make recovery possible
The Recovery Movement Gains Acceptance
Over the last few years, the recovery community has grown larger and stronger than ever before. As more individuals encounter substance abuse issues, the stigma surrounding addiction has begun to diminish.
Observances like National Recovery Month help raise awareness of the need to improve access to resources and support individuals on the journey to recovery. With more individuals sharing their voices and experiences, the recovery movement is on a path to gaining more widespread acceptance.
